Vineyard Wind

Vineyard Wind invited Saltonstall Architects to collaborate on permitting and construction observation for their Martha’s Vineyard-based Operations and Maintenance facility. The 14,000 s.f. building serves as the land-based operations for the permanent staff who will maintain, monitor, and operate the largest offshore wind farm in the United States. The facility serves as a storage and maintenance warehouse of electrical parts, motors, and other equipment for the 837-foot-tall turbines. Various Vineyard Wind partners occupy the office spaces and support areas. The building also acts as a critical home base for technicians and maintenance workers to meet, prepare, and launch out to the turbines daily, as it is conveniently located adjacent to a new terminal now being built on Vineyard Haven harbor from which several boats will eventually embark to service the wind farm.

The building’s location near the water presented an interesting challenge, requiring the warehouse floor to be raised out of the flood zone on an 18-inch reinforced concrete slab supported by approximately 78 one-hundred-fifty-foot driven piles. This presented an opportunity to locate parking below the building, as the site is very compact.

This waterfront commercial project was an interesting endeavor. We enjoyed collaborating with all our partners and visiting the Vineyard regularly for project meetings.
