The design intent of this project was to create a high-performance building in the style of a traditional New England farmhouse. Set toward the rear of a sloping site, the building massing is designed to step down the steep topography of the field. A fresh interpretation of traditional trim details finish out the interior, highlighted by a cherry-paneled office. The post-and-beam “barn” is connected to the house with a screen porch, and accommodates a large entertainment space as well as in-law apartment. Building orientation was determined to maximize exterior views and enhance solar production. Highlights of the high-performance building include super-insulated building envelope, ground source heat pumps, and an extensive solar photovoltaic array to offset electrical usage.
