Lewis Street Net Zero

A second project with this client, this home was built on an unusually narrow lot, which led to several important design choices. Notably, the garage is located at the front of the house, requiring residents to walk through the front entry and hall to reach the main living areas, which include a great room, kitchen, dining area, and a screened porch that offers the seclusion of the woods behind the home. There is a first-floor primary suite, a den with an adjacent full bath (which can easily be converted to a second guest suite), a sizeable pantry, and two guest rooms with ensuite baths on the second floor. A historic glacial rock, rich in local folklore, was preserved and integrated into the landscape design. The house was also designed as a net-zero home to take advantage of its significant solar potential and minimize long-term operational costs. The south-facing screened porch was designed to extend the great room space and allow the occupants to enjoy the privacy of the backyard.  The front roof deck facilitated the owner’s interest in interacting with neighbors and passersby, as Lewis Street is part of a popular walking loop in town.
