Innovating through
effective listening and
partnering

Architecture is a collaborative process at Saltonstall Architects (SA). In our experience, a successful project is the result of a very interactive relationship between owner, designer, and a number of other team contributors selected specifically for a particular project. Using face-to-face team meetings and web tools, we have developed an inclusive, non-linear design process that encourages all participants to actively communicate in one space.

TEAM-BASED APPROACH

Our project approach avoids the pitfalls of traditional architect-led teams where opportunities for innovation and cost efficiency are missed due to filtering of information. A successful process starts with the creation of a strong relationship between owner and architect. We commence the design process by asking the client a series of questions to clearly establish project goals and understand client values. Next we assemble an appropriate consultant team based upon project objectives. Input from technical consultants early and often in the design process leads to need-based, efficient design decisions. This integrated, team-based approach is essential to create cost-effective, sustainable solutions for our projects.

PARTNERING

As the old adage goes, "It's not what you know but who you know." SA has aligned itself with the region’s most respected partners, consultants, building contractors, and material suppliers. Each project provides an opportunity for unique partnerships to explore sustainable building practices. Through our long history in the region, we have developed experience with many local building contractors, and frequently guide our clients toward the most appropriate contractor to collaborate with on a project buildout. Our frequent presence in front of local and regional permitting authorities keeps us aware of important factors affecting project approvals. It is through discussions with the project team, consultants, approving officials, community members, and other interested parties that we advance a more sustainable approach to building design.

CULTURE OF INNOVATION

Each team member of SA brings valuable knowledge to the projects they lead. An unrestricted culture of creativity and enthusiasm encourages the constant exchange of ideas in our studio environment. Our knowledge of advanced building techniques is rooted in an active effort to educate ourselves on the latest building materials, processes, tools, and techniques. We are strongly connected to our local communities, and stay involved through active participation in non-profit groups and local government. Our history of success is founded on a family-style office culture where supportive team efforts lead to innovative project results and long term relationships with our clients.
